String Garden

String Garden now available on streaming services and CD!  I am pleased to announce the release of an album of 11 original “chamber jazz”compositions featuring the cello! It was a privilege to work with three stellar musicians on this recording: Kevin Laliberté – guitars, my brother Drew Birston – acoustic and electric bass, and Resendo ‘Chendy’ León – drums and percussion. They are well known for their work with Sultans of String and Amanda Martinez, and are in high demand as session players and performers.

If you would like to order a CD, please drop me a note through the Contact Me link, and I will get right back to you with details.

String Garden is widely available on dozens of streaming services. Here are just three links for your convenience:

Following are the liner notes and credits for the album.

String Garden is the name of our quartet and this, our first, album. The reference to a garden is in tribute to the great cellist Edgar Lustgarten (1916 – 1979). The composition “Garden of Joy” is a translation of his name, appropriately enough. His poetic playing has been an inspiration to me for decades, ever since I first heard him on the album “The Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet.” That recording is still available, and well worth seeking out, along with the same quartet’s collaboration with The Singers Unlimited, “Just in Time.” It’s a nice coincidence that a string garden is also a traditional form of artistic Japanese horticulture known as Kokedama.
